Essential tremor
When action tremor makes daily activities difficult despite medical treatment, MRgFUS cerebellothalamic tractotomy may offer relief.
At SIFUS in Bern-Ostermundigen, MRI-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) offers selected patients an incisionless treatment option for essential tremor, Parkinson’s disease and therapy-resistant neuropathic pain.

Swiss Private Institute of
Focused Ultrasound Surgery
SIFUS is a specialised Swiss centre for focused ultrasound neurosurgery and neurological consultations. Our multidisciplinary team combines anatomical knowledge, MRI-based targeting and individualised clinical assessment.
In addition to MRgFUS assessment and follow-up, we provide general neurology consultations, EEG and ENMG diagnostics.
The choice of treatment begins with your symptoms, medical history and a careful review of alternative options.
When action tremor makes daily activities difficult despite medical treatment, MRgFUS cerebellothalamic tractotomy may offer relief.
Selected patients with therapy-resistant motor symptoms can be assessed for targeted MRgFUS pallidothalamic tractotomy.
In selected severe, therapy-resistant neuropathic pain, central lateral thalamotomy targets thalamic circuits involved in pain processing.
MRgFUS concentrates ultrasound energy on a small brain target. MR imaging helps plan the procedure and monitor temperature during treatment, without opening the skull or implanting electrodes.
Suitability depends on diagnosis, skull characteristics, MRI compatibility, other health conditions and personal goals. The team discusses potential benefits, alternatives and possible side effects during assessment.
Every treatment decision starts with an individual clinical evaluation. Not everyone who contacts SIFUS will be a suitable candidate for focused ultrasound.
Review of symptoms, previous treatment, relevant imaging and goals.
Specialist examination, MRI and skull CT; further testing when appropriate.
If indicated, targeted sonications with thermometry and clinical feedback.
Imaging, neurological review and coordinated longer-term follow-up.
SIFUS brings together functional neurosurgery, neurology, engineering and coordinated patient care in Bern-Ostermundigen.
The current team continues a longstanding collaboration developed through the SoniModul focused ultrasound programme in Solothurn. At SIFUS, our emphasis is careful patient selection and highly individualised MRI-based treatment planning.
For essential tremor, Parkinson’s disease and neuropathic pain, different circuits and targets are considered. Surgery is offered only after weighing expected benefits, limitations, risks and other available therapies.
In addition to functional neurosurgical assessment, SIFUS provides neurological consultations, postoperative follow-up and neurophysiological diagnostics such as EEG and ENMG.
Clinical experience developed through the SoniModul programme and continued at SIFUS in Ostermundigen. We enjoy working together.
